Join accomplished authors and writing instructors Katey Schultz and Anne-Marie Oomen for a week-long writing retreat focused on deep revision. This fully-immersive, facilitated writing residency blends traditional instruction and self-guided writing time, with the end goal of revising a large portion of a full or partial manuscript. Curated in the spirit of uninterrupted focus, precise facilitation, and creative community, this residency is best suited for participants with a full or partial first draft (minimum) in fiction or nonfiction. For example, a writer with at least three or four short stories or essays that need deep revision, or a writer with a memoir or novel in its 3rd round of revisions, would benefit equally from what the retreat can offer.

Each day will balance a mix of independent, solitary work time (with optional mindful flow exercises to inspire), group craft lessons, communal or solo meals, and evening fireside chats to share writing successes and challenges of the day. Participants will stay at Interlochen in their own private spaces, a single-room cabin or individual hotel room serving as a personal studio. The beautiful campus promotes an intellectual life grounded in nature, with a multitude of options for walking, reading, ruminating, and researching. Feedback on a writing sample and a one-on-one, 45-minute tutorial with the instructor is also included.

To express interest in the retreat, simply register below and pay the $15 application fee. You will then be prompted to submit a 10-15 page writing sample and list of 2 references. Once those are received, your application will be complete.

Review of completed applications begins January 1, 2019 (in the order received) and early application is strongly encouraged. Normal turnaround time is within two weeks. Applications accepted until program is full; space is limited. Details provided upon registration.

Application Fee: $15

Retreat Tuition:

  • $1,320: Price includes lodging in Stone hotel lakeside room (limited availability) and $675 workshop fee. Meals not included.

  • $1,450: Price includes private lodge with kitchenette and $675 workshop fee. Meals not included.

Participants accepted into the Retreat are expected to cultivate a spirit of generosity and respect, limiting cell phone use when in common areas and side-lining discursiveness that may impinge on another’s creative flow. We’ll strive for an atmosphere of focus and support and hope for jovial conversation and decompression each night as we gather to “fill our wells” with reflection and encouragement.
