Encaustic painting, or painting with hot wax, can produce beautiful and dramatic results. Heated beeswax becomes a painting medium when color pigments are added. You may obtain a final surface that is silky and smooth or richly textured, and both will beg to be touched. Learn basic encaustic techniques—what to do when, in order to get controlled and exciting results, from this ancient, but still unique medium. Versatile and fun for both beginners as well as experienced artists, encaustic painting also offers opportunities to embed items into the work such as photographs, papers, drawings, fibers or other thin materials. This workshop will begin with a demonstration of the techniques and tools, and safety tips will be given. Practice boards will be provided to help participants explore the medium before committing to their own panels to create their finished imagery. All supplies are provided as a part of the materials fee, however students should bring soft, smooth rags, photo reference materials and items to be embedded, if desired (please see Supplies tab for details). All skill levels are welcome. No previous experience is required.
