Mixed Media Collage Workshop
Collage is the art of creating an image by assembling different materials onto a two-dimensional surface. Using materials such as paper, fabric, photos, found objects, paint, and glue, Chicago-based artist Philip Hartigan will guide you through the process of selecting your materials to design a compelling composition that is meaningful to you. Learn to experiment with a wide variety of media and how to build the surface of your piece, whether abstract or realist. If you can cut paper and use glue, you can create a professional, exciting work of art in this workshop! A materials fee is included as a part of your registration, however, students should plan to bring magazines, newspapers, copies of your favorite photos, fabric scraps, paper ephemera, small flat objects (such as buttons), or any other personally meaningful items that you may want to incorporate in your collage. All skill levels welcome.
Imagine gluing materials with interesting textures to a plastic plate or piece of card, rolling it with ink, and pressing dampened paper against it. Voila! You’ve just made a collagraph print. In this two day class, you will learn how to collage your materials together to create realistic or abstract images. Make direct prints from them, use them as backgrounds, or combine them with other printmaking techniques such as monotypes. All levels welcome.
